Creation Collides

Today’s piece is called Elbara which translates roughly to “Made by God”. We go over our inspiration for this four foot black walnut slab and talk about some of the ideas behind the intricate pieces of stone.

We wanted to accentuate the split in the stump where one tree became two large stumps. In the center of both stumps we placed an ammonite and off of the broken stump you can see azurite poring down onto the rest of the sculpture. Out of the center spiral we have book matched travertine, Petoskey (a fossilized coral), and turquoise. Book matches are when you split a stone or slab in half and place the two halves next to each other. The two spirals meet each other at the crotch of the slab where the two logs grew apart and into each other. We loved working on this beautiful black walnut with these amazing stones. This is truly a one-of-a-kind piece.

Jewelry for a Table!

Using over 150 stone pieces for this table, the effort and attention to detail paid off! We are very excited to show off the beautiful claro walnut top and all of its inlays!

Andy has been putting an emphasis on treating our work as if we are dressing it up with beautiful jewelry. If you look at any one of our pieces you will notice that we have always used jewelry-grade gems alongside rustic stones. In some cases, we will cut open copper ore or iron ore to reveal beautiful raw metals inside! In this piece, we have some "live edge" dendritic opal. We used the natural edges of the opal and the natural hole left by the wood to create the shape of the "necklace". The final product came out stunning! Jason has also included ammonites, travertine, geodes, and abalone on either end of the table, accenting the centerpiece like a set of earrings to complete the design!

Stones included in this table are turquoise, azurite-malachite, coral, mookaite, abalone,
monk’s glass, tiger iron eye, fluorite, lapis, geodes, New Mexico travertine, and ammonites.

Butterfly Cluster

We are talking with Jason Romero, the lead artist on our latest sculpture, “Butterfly Cluster.” Jason has been working with us for about five years and has been a great fit due to his care and attention to detail! "Butterfly Cluster" is made from Claro walnut with a salt cedar base inlaid with black walnut, Claro walnut, and salt cedar as well as various gems and stones.
As Andy and Jason looked over this piece it became clear the direction they were going to go. “When I first saw the wood in its raw form I saw caterpillars and butterflies,” says Jason.

The stones used in this piece are ammonites, snakeskin jasper (a red striped stone), bumblebee jasper (a yellow and black calcite), labradorite, mookaite, mother of pearl, various turquoise and azurite-malachite. The main mosaic is meant to invoke the beauty of nature’s butterfly clusters and the subtle wood butterflies alongside the less subtle stone and semiprecious stones are meant to imitate the elusive flight of the creatures.

We were transported by the beauty of this wood and hope to invoke those same feelings with our interpretation of it.

We are also in the process of making a proper rotating stand for this piece. It’s in the workshop as we speak! Once it’s finished we will have an update. However, you don’t need a rotating stand to enjoy this sculpture. It will make an amazing centerpiece wherever you place it.

If there is something you are looking for or if you want to contact us about this piece feel free to do so any time! We would love to talk to you!

Conversations with the artists: Nine Foot Alligator Juniper Table

We are talking about our process a bit and also reminiscing about some early memories in today’s video! When Andy Sanchez first saw the gnarly wood that was alligator juniper he knew he had something special. Live edge furniture in the early '90s was not nearly as popular as it is today but Andy knew if he could just show people what he had discovered people would fall in love with it just as much as he had. He was right! Today's table for discussion is a nine-foot table made from two book-matched juniper slabs inlaid with bumblebee jasper, azurite-malachite, and ammonites.

Bumblebee Jasper is the centerpiece of this table. It is laid out in a book-match pattern across the table with a slight twist towards one of the ends. This asymmetrical pattern gives the table an organic feel making the over 30 pieces of inlay feel as though they were destined for this tabletop.

As you can see in some of these photos, the ammonite and azurite-malachite inlays are carefully fitted into knot holes making the grain of the wood “wrap” around the stones.

Alligator juniper table: ready for it’s close up!

Alligator juniper table: ready for it’s close up!

In 2020, we spent some time working on several new concept ideas. We posted a little about it in some social media posts but we are ready to now reveal more about these pieces with the help of video. Andy and Daniel Sanchez and Jason Romero sat down and spoke in-depth about their process, the ideas that they began with, and the influences that eventually developed the sculptures and furniture in our gallery today. Those videos and posts will be coming out throughout February and into the year.
