About a hundred years ago lumber companies were harvesting lumber from the redwood forests and probably did not think once about the fact that there was a limit to the resource. They were looking for clear wood that could be used in manufacturing houses and furniture in our rapidly growing country. The first 8 or10 feet of these massive trees were un-useable by them as they were knarly and knotty. They had been compressed by the huge weight above them pressing down on the root system. The companies also had to build roads through the forest to reach the deepest woods, roads that crossed streams and gullies. The lower sections of these trees became the solution. They used them to fill the holes and gullies, and poured dirt over them to built their roads.
Since then we have learned that there was an end to the resource and have been saddened by the destruction of the forests. In an effort to reclaim those magnificent woods, men are now attempting to put the woods back into their former condition by taking out the roads and putting the holes and gullies back into their original condition. Here comes the good part! They have been uncovering those knarly, knotty trees and they are still in pretty good condition. Perfect for the kind of work we do!
We met one of those men who are working on the forests and he thought we would be the perfect ones to work on those treasures of history also. We have been able to purchase several trees from him and Andy wasted no time in creating a table from one of the slabs. It is some of the most gorgeous wood we have ever seen! Beautifully figured and spotted with some holes perfectly designed for Andy & Aaron’s inlays. Our supply is limited but we hope to acquire some more pieces from our source soon. We can’t wait to take them to some of our shows. You’re gonna love them!! |
